At our university, necessary measures are taken to ensure that students with disabilities can continue their education without obstacles. In this context, ramps suitable for wheelchair use are available to enable access to all buildings. In the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences building, where our department is located, there is an elevator providing access to all floors, Braille signage for visually impaired users, and a platform in the conference hall to facilitate stage access for individuals with disabilities. In addition, accessible restrooms are available on every floor. Dedicated parking spaces are also provided for students with disabilities and academic staff within the campus and particularly in the parking area of our faculty building. Thus, the physical needs of our students with disabilities are met within the university campus.
In the “2022 Barrier-Free University Awards,” where 1,074 applications from 114 universities were evaluated across different categories, our university received awards in three categories: Accessibility in Physical Spaces (Orange Flag), Accessibility in Education (Green Flag), and Accessibility in Socio-Cultural Activities (Blue Flag). As a result, our university’s Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences (which includes our department), Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Design, Faculty of Sports Sciences, Graduate Education Institute, and Mehmet Akif Ersoy and Mimar Sinan lecture halls received a total of 16 awards. The total number of flags awarded to our university reached 24. In 2023, our university received 6 additional awards, ranking 4th in Turkey, and the total number of flags increased to 40.
The Bartın University Disabled Students Unit Coordination Office (BÜEÖB) was established to ensure that students with special needs benefit equally from university services and opportunities, to support their academic, physical, psychological, and personal development, and to implement necessary arrangements. The unit operates under the Rectorate of Bartın University. The coordinator, unit members, and student representatives serve on a voluntary basis. Among the academic unit representatives, one research assistant from our department is included. Additionally, a student from our department is a member of the Advisory Board of the Disabled Students Unit Coordination Office.
Representatives of the Disabled Students Unit consist of academic or administrative staff selected voluntarily from each faculty. These representatives ensure communication between students with disabilities and the unit within their respective faculties.
This coordination office ensures that students with disabilities can access both indoor and outdoor areas of the campus, identifies and proposes solutions to problems faced by students with disabilities, organizes events, supports participation in social, cultural, and sports activities, adapts educational and examination environments to meet special needs, and raises awareness about disability. In addition, our faculty and department have designated representatives for students with disabilities.
Decisions of academic boards regarding midterm and final exams for students with disabilities, course exemptions, relevant laws, regulations, directives, and unit activity reports are available on the Disabled Students Unit Coordination Office website. The university also provides a directive and student guide for this unit. Within this framework, accommodations such as additional exam time, extra sheets, and large-print exam papers are provided based on students’ needs. Students with special needs can benefit from services such as “Instructional Adaptation Letter, Course Partnering, and Note-Taking Support” by applying directly to the academic unit representative, filling out the service request form on the website, sending an email, or applying directly to the unit. These services aim to meet students’ academic needs through the forms provided in the Academic Adaptation Guide. Additionally, the Bartın University Quality Coordination Office conducts satisfaction surveys for students with disabilities and shares the results.
